How Does the Science of Our Evolved Nest Help to Heal Our Hero's Journey?

The evolved nest doesn’t just meet the child's needs—it heals the parent, too. By embedding parenting within biological, communal, and emotional scaffolds—like oxytocin-linked care, shared caregiving, healing rituals, nurturing touch, and connection with nature—it short-circuits the emotional spiral of the Grief/Hero’s Journey Cycle and transforms it into a regenerative quest.

REMEMBER…

When You Called Upon Your Imagination to Create Your World?

YOU STILL CAN.

The science is in.

We “know” everything we need to know to nurture ourselves, our families, our communities and our Earth. You are welcome to explore the award-winning, transdisciplinary, integrative science of our Evolved Nest, by Darcia Narvaez, at our sister-initiative, The Evolved Nest.

The many components to our evolutionary pathway to wellbeing, our evolved nest, have been explored at Kindred Magazine for over 20 years. You are welcome to discover our New Story of the Human Family at our sister-initiative and alternative media project, Kindred Magazine. The magazine features Darcia's work and writings and uses the lens of the holistic theory of our Evolved Nest to finally "see" our way to Welcoming a Wisdom-based, Wellness-informed World (our nonprofit mission and vision at Kindred World).

What is needed now is a willingness to follow a call to adventure, an adventure that promises to shift our awareness in a way that helps us return to the wholeness of ourselves and remember…

  • How to imagine.
  • How to play.
  • How to construct the whole-hearted adventure we want to experience.
  • And how to be present so we don’t miss a single enchanted moment of our precious lives.

With the loving guidance you'll find in Parenting as a Hero's Journey you will also discover:

  • How to spot and avoid the traps of soul-draining modern parenting mythology.

  • How to create daily habits that allow you to draw strength, wisdom and inspiration for your rite-of-parenthood journey.

  • How to immerse yourself in the natural magic of connection with your self, partner and child.

  • How parenthood, unlike any other rite-of-passage you will face, provides the greatest adventure of your lifetime.

Parenting As A Hero’s Journey calls upon the insights of Joseph Campbell’s Great Monomyth Wheel – the universal structure of storytellers – that helps us as individuals and communities to create and understand the personal and collective stories/mythologies we live by.  As Campbell teaches us, we all make daily and life choices through these personal mythologies, which serve as our lenses, or worldviews. Campbell believes it is our unique quest to discover these personal mythologies and then to retool them to our higher purposes.

With parents, many of these mythologies are passed down unconsciously through family traditions and cultural conditioning.  To become aware of our own mythologies and claim authorship of our own stories is the purpose of all forms of conscious parenting.

If you are a parent who is questioning cultural norms, feeling out of place in the world, or unsatisfied with your “identity” as a parent, you are hearing the ancient “Call To Adventure.”

This Call has inspired heroines and heroes of ancient and modern mythology to leave their day to day lives in search of “Something Else Our Hearts Believe Is Possible.”

Today, it is the parents who are answering this ancient call that are transforming themselves, and therefore the world.  The choice to follow the call can feel like a Grief Cycle, as we say goodbye to our industrial cultural programming (leave the known world behind) and set out to reclaim our humanity from a war-torn, climate-changing world.

Hero's Journeys and Grief Cycles: Parenthood Is Both

How Parenthood is a Grief Cycle and a Hero's Journey

How are Parenting as a Hero's Journey and a Grief Cycle Similar?

Both a grief cycle and a hero's journey share a similar structure of stages, encompassing departure, trials, and return, though with different contexts and emotional tones. The hero's journey, as outlined by Joseph Campbell, follows a character who leaves their ordinary world for an adventure, faces challenges, and ultimately returns transformed. Similarly, grief can be seen as a journey where individuals experience a loss, navigate its emotional landscape, and eventually integrate the experience into their lives, finding a new sense of self and purpose.

Both models describe deep personal transformation. The Grief Cycle helps understand the emotional stages of processing loss, while the Parenting Hero’s Journey frames the upheaval and growth of becoming a parent as a mythic transformation. They overlap in themes like resistance, suffering, surrender, and eventual growth—but where grief often ends in acceptance, the parenting journey may repeat cyclically, with each new phase (toddler, teen, empty nest) initiating a new call to adventure.

1. Denial / The Call to Adventure (or Refusal)

  • Grief Cycle: In Denial, a person shields themselves from the reality of loss.
  • Hero’s Journey: In parenting, the Call to Adventure (or its refusal) is the initial tug—feeling overwhelmed or ill‑prepared. Parents often think, “I can’t do this,” echoing denial of the change ahead

2. Anger / Emotional Ordeal

  • Grief Cycle: Anger emerges as frustration, blame, or resentment.
  • Hero’s Journey: Parenting triggers deep psychological reactions—anger, resentment, shame—when children reflect unresolved wounds. The site describes this as being “yanked into the underworld of the deep psyche”.

3. Bargaining / Surrender & Seeking Support

  • Grief Cycle: Bargaining involves attempts to regain control (“If only…”). Support is sought.
  • Hero’s Journey: Parents seek mentors, methods, rituals (like yoga nidra), and communities to regain balance and inspiration—echoing the bargaining impulse but channeled through surrender and tools for resilience.

4. Depression / Dark Night & Transformation

  • Grief Cycle: Depression marks the profound grieving, an abyss of sorrow and introspection.
  • Hero’s Journey: Parenting leads to the “Dark Nights of the Soul”—times of despair, isolation, crippling self-doubt, yet opening doors to transformation and surrender.

5. Acceptance / Elixir & Integration

  • Grief Cycle: In Acceptance, one reconciles and adapts to life without what was lost.
  • Hero’s Journey: Parents emerge with new wisdom, habits, and inner alignment—they return bearing the “elixir” of self-awareness, relaxed presence, and deeper connection to self, partner, and child.

"Heroes and heroines in mythical tales go underground, out to sea, deep into forests, or out into the open desert. The parenthood journey is about intentional vulnerability.

A profound learning awaits us and the potential exists for us to emerge from this journey transformed." – Robin Grille, Inner Child, Inner Wisdom
